The Overview
Recess began as an idea to make mental resets effortless — a ten-minute pause that helps you find balance, focus, and flow. We led the full design and brand process — from strategy and naming to UX/UI, app design, and web development — shaping a cohesive ecosystem centered on mindfulness in motion.
Our goal was simple yet ambitious: to turn a moment of stillness into a movement of wellbeing.
The Vision
Recess was born from one founder’s search for flow — that state where mind and body align, free from noise and distraction. The brand’s mission: make mental clarity accessible anywhere, anytime.
Through science-backed design and mindful technology, Recess invites users to pause, recharge, and return to what matters most — themselves.
The Challenge
We weren’t creating another meditation app. We were designing a sanctuary in your pocket. The challenge was to blend modern neuroscience with intuitive design — to create a digital experience that felt calm, human, and genuinely restorative.
Every touchpoint — from visual language to interaction design — needed to communicate ease and intention.
The Process
We began by defining the essence of the brand: a pause to find yourself.
- Strategy & Positioning — Established Recess as a brand built around balance and clarity. Defined its emotional territory — calm confidence — and core audience: high-performing professionals seeking moments of stillness.
- Naming & Identity — Crafted the name Recess to evoke simplicity and relief — a conscious break from the constant. The visual identity mirrored this idea through clean geometry, soft gradients, and breathing space in typography.
- Product & Experience Design — Designed the web and mobile experience to guide users through micro-breaks grounded in mindfulness and neuroscience. Created a smooth onboarding flow, custom breathing animations, and a simple UX hierarchy to minimize friction.
- Development & Launch — Partnered with developers to ensure seamless transitions, clean code, and scalable design systems. Created a launch microsite and onboarding emails to introduce users to their “first pause.”
The result was a holistic brand and product experience that aligned feeling with function — calm, focused, and refreshingly human.
The Outcome
Recess launched successfully across app stores, resonating deeply with both individuals and corporate wellness programs. Within months:
- 8× growth in customer signups
- 5,000+ downloads
- 5+ corporate partners integrated Recess into their employee wellbeing programs
What started as an idea for a ten-minute reset has become a movement for everyday balance.
